Scores and highlights from Thursday’s Class 3A quarterfinals at the Iowa high school girls’ soccer state tournament in Des Moines.
W.D.M. Valley 3, Ankeny 2
An Abbey VanWyngarden hat trick allowed the top-seeded Tigers (15-3) to go ahead of and hold off upset-minded Ankeny. Molly Close struck first for the Hawkettes (11-8) just three minutes in, but an injury to sophomore Chloee Kooker brought an ambulance on to Field 9 and stopped the match soon after. VanWyngarden struck before and after the halftime whistle, scoring enough to edge out the 2015 Class 2A champs.

Ankeny Centennial 2, Bettendorf 1
Coach Chris Allen’s speedy midfield fired the Jaguars (16-3) into the semifinals with goals from junior Kenzie Geiger and senior Kayla Grenier. The defending champions let in a 67th minute strike from Bettendorf freshman Olivia Lewis, but the back line held off any further advances. Centennial will face Valley on Friday, who it beat 2-1 in their early regular-season meeting.

Senior striker Emma Cooper stormed down Field 6 and tucked away an 88th-minute game-winner in overtime to send the Women of Troy to the semifinals for the fourth time in the last five years. Dowling Catholic defended and counter-attacked as well as West allowed, with midfielder Regan Steigleder patrolling and bouncing a potential game-winner off the crossbar with 10 seconds left in regular time. West (19-1) had a penalty kick saved in the first minute of overtime, but Cooper’s breakaway and goal provided the victory.

Ames 6, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 1
Grace Nelson’s four goals allowed Ames to easily overcome an early strike from Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Field 7. Senior Emily Sass put the Cougars ahead for just over two minutes until the Little Cyclones (15-3) pull forward and took over their first tournament game since 2007. Nelson’s strikes were joined by a 24th-minute goal from Hartley Christensen and a 76th-minute cap by Jayna Wanamaker.
